Filomena Piscitelli

MILLBURY – Filomena (Eramo) Piscitelli, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb 1st, due to complications from COVID-19.

Filomena’s husband, Frank J. Piscitelli, Sr. passed in 2008.  She leaves four sons, Frank J. Piscitelli, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, James L. Piscitelli and his wife, Mary, Steven P. Piscitelli and his wife, Lori and John C. Piscitelli; ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and many other family members. She is predeceased by her parents, Luigi and Maria, her four brothers, Al, Leo, Dom and Louie, and a granddaughter, Samantha.

Filomena was born and lived all her life in Millbury. She graduated from Millbury High School. In her younger years she worked at United Public Market in Worcester and Industrial Lunch in Millbury. In her later years, Filomena worked at the Millbury Board of Health. She worked at the voting poles for almost 40 years and volunteered for many town activities.

Filomena was a talented homemaker. She canned fruits and vegetables for many years with her mother, made clothes for herself and her family, taught many people how to make homemade pasta, made Italian cookies by the hundreds, taught herself how to debone a whole turkey using a surgeon’s scalpel, and for her entire adult life made and gave away braided rugs.

Filomena and Frank enjoyed many winter vacations in Florida and endless summer days on Stiles Lake in Spencer.

Whether you knew her as Filomena or Phil or Auntie Phil or Mom or Gram or GiGi or Great Grandma, one thing was sure, she loved seeing you and she loved your company.

She and Frank hosted many family gatherings. Over the years numbering into the hundreds and hundreds including Sunday Family Dinners, Birthdays, Anniversaries, 4th of July Picnics, Labor Day Picnics, Thanksgiving Dinners and Christmas Eve Dinners. Their last New Year’s Eve Party was a special occasion celebrating the year 2000. Being together with family & friends was a very important part of their lives.

As we all know, Filomena had a great love of cooking. On her kitchen floor there is an oval shaped braided rug. The center of this rug was the center of her cooking world. One step to the refrigerator. One step to the stove. One step to the microwave. One step to the counter. One step to the sink. And… only God knows… the amount of food that was prepared and served from that very small kitchen.

Some of her words to remember… If she was busy in the kitchen, everyone needed to “Stay off the rug!” If you helped clearing the dishes, “Don’t stack!” If you go home hungry, “It’s your own darn fault!”

At the age of sixteen, Filomena started a part-time job in Worcester at United Public Market and almost crossed paths with the young man that she would later come to know and marry. Frank worked at the very same market. He left his job to enter the Army the day before she started her job. Three years later, after the war, Filomena and Frank met for the first time at a dance. And, in 1947, she and Frank were married on a picture-perfect day in the month of May. They had 60 earthly years together. Now they are together forever.

Filomena was busy by nature. Each day had many things to accomplish. Each day had meaning. A good way to live life.
