MILLBURY – Robert D. Sullivan, 86, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Oct. 16th after a brief illness.
Bob leaves his wife of 62 years, Rita P. (Roy) Sullivan; a son, Dr. Mack Lee Sullivan and his wife, Ashley of Cortland Manor, NY; two granddaughters, Quinn L. Sullivan and Kiara L. Sullivan. He is predeceased by his parents, Dennis and Mildred (Lindsay) Sullivan.
Bob was known by many as an educator and coach. He began his teacher and coaching career in Vermont as a physical education teacher and later traveled to Rhode Island to take on the roles of social studies teacher, physical education teacher and athletic director.
In 1968, Bob and Rita moved to Millbury where they would settle down, raise their family and spend the rest of their lives together. Bob started that same year, teaching physical education and coaching in the Millbury School System. He was always so proud of his students, over the years those students became his auto mechanic, plumber, electrician, roofer, lawyer and even his dentist.
Bob was proud to be a Millbury resident and served on many town committees such as the Rescue Truck Committee, Charter Committee and president of the local teachers association. He volunteered his time as a coach, with one of his coaching highlights being the defensive coordinator of his son’s super bowl championship 8th grade football team. Bob also served many years as a Reserve Deputy of the Worcester Sheriff’s Department and served on the Sheriff’s Rapid Response Team. He enjoyed umpiring softball and refereeing basketball.
Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Bob’s life by gathering for a time of visitation on Friday, Oct. 23rd from 4 to 7 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 N. Main Street, Millbury. His funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 24th at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.
