MILLBURY - John “Jack” Joseph Whiterell, 77, died in his home on June 13th surrounded by his family, after a 15-year battle with prostate cancer.
Born in 1949 in Worcester to Irving Whiterell and Charlotte (McDermott) Whiterell, he lived in Millbury all his life.
He leaves his wife of 53 years Susan (Ojerholm) Whiterell, a daughter Kerry Whiterell of Worcester, twin sons Shawn and Kevin Whiterell both of Millbury, a grandson Tyler Whiterell of Grafton, a sister Linda (Whiterell) Stevens of Millbury, and four nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Judy (Whiterell) Gabriele.
John graduated from Millbury High School in 1967 and Worcester Industrial Technical Institute in 1969, after which he served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He worked at Data General for over 21 years in their Educational Services Department, as well as Pinnacle Training and TGM before retiring in 2014.
John was an amateur photographer and made many trips to the Rocky Mountains with his good friends Bert Kupcinskas and Mike Graves, photographing nature at its finest. He also loved camping, hiking, kayaking and snow skiing all over New England and New York and always had his camera at the ready.
John was known as a Jack of all Trades, and could build or fix just about anything. He was the “Go to” guy for his friends and family when they needed help with a project or to fix a problem that was technology related. He loved the Patriots, his little dog Pepper, his Cape Cod friends, and he loved nature in all forms.
Family and friends will honor and remember John’s life by gathering for a time of visitation on Friday, June 19th from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 N. Main Street, Millbury. His funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20th at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with burial to be private.
