John E. Washburn

SUTTON – John E. Washburn, 87, passed away peacefully at UMass Medical Center on September 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

John was a man whose warm smile, kind heart, and friendly nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He treasured time spent with family and friends and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

For 20 years, John proudly served the residents of Sutton through his work with the Sutton Highway Department. He was respected for his dedication, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his community. Whether clearing roads after heavy snowstorms or tackling the demanding work required to keep the town running smoothly, John approached every task with pride and determination.

John was blessed with two great loves in his life. His first was Shirley Anne Washburn, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage before her passing in November 2000. Together they built a loving family and raised three children: Joy Anne May of Millbury, Massachusetts; John Jay Joseph Washburn of Waynesville, Missouri; and James Madison Washburn of Apex, North Carolina.

Following Shirley's passing, John found love and companionship again with Bonnie Bell Flag of Millbury. Together they shared more than 20 wonderful years of marriage filled with affection, laughter, and cherished memories.

In addition to his beloved wife and children, John leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.

John also had a special love for dogs. His most loyal companion was Ty, who was rarely far from his side. Though Ty could be protective around others, the bond he shared with John was unmistakable. Ty could often be found faithfully waiting for his favorite treats of ice cream or roast beef while keeping watch over his best friend.

More than anything, John will be remembered for his generosity, dependability, and devotion to his family. Through years of dedicated service and countless acts of kindness, he earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him. His legacy lives on not only through his family, but also through the many lives he touched throughout the Town of Sutton and beyond.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John’s family will honor and remember him with private services.
