MILLBURY - John J. Maciak, 96, passed away on Sunday September 11, 2022 at St. Vincent’s Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late John and Jennie (Kaminski) Maciak. He was predeceased by his wife Jean in 1994.
He is survived by his two daughters; Diane Sullivan and her husband John “Jay” Sullivan of Oxford and Donna Godin of Auburn; three grandchildren; Brian Sullivan and his spouse Andrea Dupont, Christopher Godin and Natasha Godin-Lippe; four great grandchildren; Trevor, Connor, Cameron and Virginia.
He leaves his two brothers; Walter Maciak and his family of Santa Rosa, CA, and Daniel Maciak and his family of Dallas, OR. His sister Barbara Rogers passed in 2007.
John served his country during WW II, stationed in San Francisco, CA. His tour of duty was fighting in the South Pacific aboard the USS Gilligan DE-508 where heavy battles occurred although he returned home, but many of his crew members did not.
He married his sweetheart Jean Harris when he returned. They settled in Millbury in 1955 where they raised their family. He retired from General Motors after 37 years of service.
In May 2022, John was awarded a “Quilt of Valor” for his service during World War II by the “Freedom Quilters of Millbury”. It was a great honor bestowed upon him.
John was a very giving and loving person. He was always willing to lend a hand. Not only was he a gentleman he was a “gentle man”. He enjoyed people and having an active life. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends or trying his luck at the table games at the casino and his yearly trip to Las Vegas, along with going to restaurants near and far.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate and remember John’s life with a time of visitation on Thursday, Sept 15th from 4 to 7 p.m. in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 N. Main Street in Millbury.
His funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept 16th at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
