MILLBURY Donald C. Schroeder, 74, of 21 Prospect St., died Thursday, Jan. 11th , in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Carol A. (Murphy) Schroeder; two sons, William C. Schroeder of Auburn and James D. Schroeder of Millbury; a grandson, Christopher Schroeder of Auburn; two brothers, Robert Schroeder of Grafton and Philip Schroeder of Sutton; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester on September 12, 1932 and is predeceased by his parents, Carl and Florence (Johnson) Schroeder and a brother, David Schroeder of Sutton. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1951, where he was captain of the football team. He earned an Associates Degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Junior College in 1957.
Mr. Schroeder was a Navy veteran from 1952 to 1956, during the Korean War and served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid, which is now a sea-air-space museum in New York Harbor. Donald was plant metallurgist for Henry L. Hanson Co., Reed & Prince Co. and Reed Rico Co. He later worked as consultant and was highly regarded in the field of metallurgy. He was also an accomplished musician and played the saxophone professionally for over 30 years, most of that time with the Bobby Z Quartet.
His funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 13th from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. BrigidTM)s Church, 59 Main St, Millbury. Burial will be in St. BrigidTM)s Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12th in the funeral home.
