Charles Gurney

February 28, 1925 — March 9, 2002

MILLBURY - Charles N. 'Chuck' Gurney Jr., 77, of 8 Cherry St., died Saturday, March 9, at St. Vincent Hospital, at the Worcester Medical Center, after a battle with Leukemia.

He leaves three sons, Robert B. Campbell of Auburn, Charles N. Gurney III of Douglas and Daniel C. Gurney of Worcester; three daughters, Patricia L. Gurney-Skeean of West Haven Ct., Carol A. DiIorio of Sutton and Carrie E. Gurney of Millbury; nine grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Charles N. Gurney Sr. and Florence P. (Trasher) Gurney and has lived in Millbury all his life. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1942. He was a graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

Mr. Gurney was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Millbury for 42 years, retiring in 1989. He was an Army veteran during WW II serving in the 94th Infantry Division in the European Theater.

He was music director / organist and a life long member of the Millbury Federated Church. He was a member and Past Master of the Olive Branch Lodge of Masons, a member, Past Worthy Patron and pianist of the former Adah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Charles F. Minney Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, a member of the Millbury Finance Committee and was active in the Millbury Republican Party. He was a former Millbury Tennis Doubles Champion.

Mr. Gurney was an avid musician, founder of the Chuck Gurney Orchestra and enjoyed gardening.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, in the Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St. Burial will be in Central Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. ( www.mulhane.com ) Memorial contributions may be made to the Millbury Federated Church, 20 Main St., Millbury, Ma. 01527.
