MILLBURY - Arthur James Markey passed away on June 15, 2023 after a brief illness.

Arthur, who went by Art, was born to Arthur Sr and Marie Markey on September 13, 1936 and grew up in Millbury, MA alongside his twin sister Janie and older sister Katherine.

He was a talented high school athlete and after graduating, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1956. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he played on the Air Force softball team.  Discharged in 1960, he attended the University of Oklahoma and was a lifelong Sooner.  Through his love of softball, he met his future wife, Carol Grendol.  They were married in 1966 and welcome their daughter Kim soon after.

His career in defense telecommunications moved the family to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona in 1980.  There, he enjoyed softball and golf year-round.  His favorite golf moment was when he made a hole in one at the Ft. Huachuca golf course.  He was an avid sports fan and loved to follow his Boston teams wherever he was living.

A favorite memory of Art is when he and Carol drove Kim and friends through Colorado with their horses one summer to participate in local rodeos.  One night, Carol and Kim came back with a puppy that promptly fell in love and idolized Art, this was true of all the pets that became part of the family.  Art was kind and generous to all who knew him. His nieces and nephews affectionally called him Uncle Archie.

He loved celebrating their accomplishments and spending time with them.  His favorite role was being Grampy.  Following Carol’s death in 2014, he moved to Altadena, CA to live with his daughter Kim, daughter-in-law Eileen and much beloved granddaughter Ana.  He had a great laugh, a beautiful smile, wicked sense of humor and loving spirit.  We miss you Uncle Archie, Grampy, Pops.

Art’s family will host graveside services on Friday, August 11th at Noon in Central Cemetery, West Street in Millbury.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Dana Farber Cancer Hospital in Boston, MA or City of Hope Cancer Hospital in Los Angeles, CA are appreciated.
