MILLBURY – Anastasios George Krassopoulos, 93, passed away peacefully on May 21st at UMass Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Marie Flaherty Krassopoulos; his two sons, Paul Krassopoulos and his wife Michelle of Sutton, and Kevin Krassopoulos and his wife Jennifer of Millbury; and his three beloved grandchildren, Katie, Malia, and Nikoli, who brought him endless pride and joy.
George was born in Targoviste, Romania on January 11th, 1933. He earned a degree in business and began his career as an accountant for the Romanian government. A man of strong principles and deep conviction, George refused to pledge allegiance to the Communist regime. In 1960, the government confiscated his family’s business and property, forcing George, along with his parents and younger brother, to flee the country using Greek passports. The family settled in Athens, Greece, where they lived until immigrating to the United States in 1964 under the sponsorship of the Romanian Church in New York.
After a brief stay in New York City, George and his family moved to Worcester, where they were welcomed by friends in central Massachusetts. Although he spoke fluent Romanian and Greek, George initially struggled to find work because of the language barrier. Determined to build a better future, he attended night school to learn English while working at Reed & Prince Manufacturing Company in Worcester.
An entrepreneur at heart, George later opened two pizza shops in Worcester before meeting the love of his life, Marie Flaherty. The couple married in 1973 at Sacred Heart Church in Hopedale and began their life together in Milford before settling in Millbury to raise their family. There, George established the family home and opened the beloved George’s Pizza on Millbury Avenue. For nearly 30 years, George proudly owned and operated the restaurant, becoming known throughout the community not only for his legendary fish and chips, but for his warm personality, quick wit, and genuine kindness. To many in town, George was more than a business owner — he was a local fixture and friend.
Retirement in 2002 did not slow George down for long. With his trademark energy and outgoing spirit, he took a part-time position at Chuck E. Cheese in Worcester, where he worked for more than a decade and became an award-winning employee who was adored by both coworkers and customers.
George treasured time with his family above all else. He loved sharing stories of “the old country” and tackling word search puzzles. Some of his happiest moments were spent around the Sunday dinner table with his family, whose jokes and antics would leave him laughing uncontrollably. When the laughter became too much, Kevin would famously declare, “We broke Georgie,” a phrase that has become a cherished family memory.
George and Marie shared a beautiful and inseparable bond. Whether running errands around town, enjoying lunch together, or “holding court” at Goretti’s with friends and former customers, the two were rarely apart. George’s resilience, humor, and love for people left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
