Joseph K. Matthews, formerly of Worcester, Millbury, and West Harwich, died August 14, 2018, with his loving wife by his side.
He leaves his wife, Margaret A. (Marlborough) Matthews; his sisters-in-law Elizabeth “Betty” Matthews of Worcester, and Catherine “Kay” Matthews of Shrewsbury, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Kerwin and Annie (Kane) Matthews; and siblings Mary Matthews, Regina “Reggie” Anderson, Edward, Olive, and Kerwin “Buddy” Matthews, and his niece, Ann Matthews Lundy.
He was born in Worcester and lived in Millbury after his marriage. He graduated from South High, served in the US Navy, and attended Boston University before joining his father as a principle in the insurance and real estate firm, Kirwin T. Matthews & Son. He was a past President of the Worcester Board of Realtors and taught real estate practice for ten years at Worcester Junior College while active in his business. Joe was a member of St. Brigid Parish in Millbury and the Greendale Men’s Club.
As a young man he was devoted to his parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. As an uncle, he was dearly loved by his dozens of nieces and nephews. Joe had a great sense of humor that complemented his practical wisdom and generosity. During his 53 year marriage, he enjoyed travels with Margaret and decades of summers on Cape Cod.
The funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17th at St. Brigid Church, 59 N. Main St. in Millbury. Burial will follow at St. Brigid Cemetery in Millbury.
