MILLBURY Joseph Sweet, 96, of Millbury, died Tuesday, June 28th in Autumn Village Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Worcester.

His first wife, Mary K. (Hamilton) Sweet, died in 1979 and his second wife, Harriet A. (Ayers) Whelan Sweet, died in 2002. He leaves a son, Paul A. Sweet of Millbury; two daughters, Mary "Mickey" T. Grenier of Charlton and Patricia E. Holland of Millbury; a sister, Rita Woodward of Millbury; a step-son, Raymond Whelan of Utah; a step-daughter, Patricia Whelan of Southbridge; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by three sons, John H. Sweet and Joseph P. Sweet and Robert Sweet and many brothers and sisters. He was born in Millbury, son of Joseph and Emma (Reno) Sweet.

Mr. Sweet owner and operated A & J Sweet Jewelry Store for 28 years retiring in 1963. He did military police work at New England Power Co in Millbury during WW II. He was a member of St. BrigidTM)s Church and was active in church activities for many years as a member of the former Legion of Mary, the former Parish Council, was a church sexton and helped organize the St. Vincent DePaul Society at the church. He had been attending the Millbury Old TimerTM)s Banquets since it was organized and was the Honored Old Timer at the 1992 banquet.

His funeral will be held Saturday, July 2nd from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. BrigidTM)s Church, 59 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be in St. BrigidTM)s Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 1st, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donorTM)s choice.
